Chala, Shuangla, Yunnan

The houses in the villages are constructed mainly from wood and nestle among beautiful wheat plots and walnut trees. The Nus here (as in elsewhere) are extremely friendly. A unique tradition of the Nus is harnessing the power of water.  More

Luoping, Yunnan

Luoping is a small county in Yunnan located about 228 kilometers north east of Kunming. It had become a Mecca for photographers, who flock to this small county every early spring to capture the magnificent “sea of yellow” of blooming rapeseed flowers. The majestic photos in turn, draw more and more tourists to this beautiful rural photographic haven.  More

Dragon Feast, Yunnan

On the 8th day of the lunar New Year, closer towards dinnertime, all the households of the Yi village Baoshao brought out a table and stools. Nearly a hundred tables were gathered in a long line, lining up the length of the main street and the square of the village- like a dragon, hence literally the name Long Dragon Feast 长龙宴. This unique event belongs to the Hani and Yi Minorities who inhabit the fabulous terraced fields of Ailao Mountains around Yuanyang. Hani people call it AMATU.  More

Sakya, Tibet

The fortress-like Sakya Monastery is unique comparing with other Tibetan monasteries that I have visited before with blue walls framed with white and red vertical stipes. Its main buildings are protected by massive walls with outstanding towers.   More

Lhasa's Shoton Festival, Tibet

The Shoton Festival falls on the 15th day of the sixth Tibetan month. It begins with the unfurling of a huge 35-by-30 meters thangka bearing the image of Sakymuni (Gautama Buddha), followed by Tibetan opera performances.   More

Lake Manasarovar, Tibet

Lake Manasarovar is sacred to the Tibetans as well as Hindus. Many Hindu pilgrims from India and Nepal visit and bath in the waters of the lake every year. Tibetans walk the 90km around the lake in 2-3 days. It is linked to a smaller lake, Lhanag-tso in Tibetan or Rakshas Tal by a channel.  More

Yanjing, Tibet

Don't miss Yanjing on your way from Yunnan to Tibet: its unique salt terrace fields/pans using century-old techniques to extract salt, its fascinating multi-racial/religious population and the only Catholic Church in Tibet. The scenery around here is stunning with beautiful villages and ancient salt pans clinging to the sheer slopes on both sides of the Mekong River Gorge.   More

Huanglong, Sichuan

The spectacular travertine, rimstone pools are unique. The forest is better protected than nearby Jiuzhaigou valley. The 5588 m snow-crowned Xuebaoding, the summit of Minshan Range, emerges at the background during fine days.  More

Jiuzhaigou, Sichuan

One of the most beautiful scenic parks in China. The amazing colors of Jiuzhaigou's lakes and pools are unique. However I would not recommend it to those backpackers who have never visited China before. Comparing with Yangshuo, Lijiang and Langmusi, Jiuzhaigou would bring you a bitter experience more often than enjoyment.  More

Siguniang, Sichuan

Four striking alpine peaks rising over 5000 meters, only 220km from Chengdu. It is a paradise for mountaineering.   More

Jiulong, Sichuan

Jiulong has some of the best alpine scenery in Sichuan or if you believe the articles of explorer Joseph Rock, “the scenery hereabouts is overwhelmingly grand."  More

Minya Konka, Sichuan

Minya Konka (or Gongga Shan ¹±¸Âɽ ) is the highest mountain in Sichuan. Situated in the Daxue Shan mountain range in the southwest of Sichuan, it is a sacred mountain to the Tibetans. There are different trekking routes around the mountain range, the most popular being a trek to the Konka Monastery (Gongga Si) ÀÏØ•¸ÂË £¨3665m£© at the foot of the glacier from the main peak (7,556m).   More

Zhaoxing, Guizhou

A beautiful village with 5 equally attractive Drum Towers that are still actively being used. Lots of great wooden houses and locals still in traditional costumes. Many opportunities for day walks to the beautiful surrounding (vast) rice terraces and other equally pretty small Dong villages.   More

Zengchong, Guizhou

Among all the Dong, Miao, Zhuang and Yao villages we visited along the route from Yangshuo to Kaili, the most beautiful one is surprisingly crowned to the unknown Dong village - Zengchong, which has never been highlighted by any guidebooks yet.   More

Yangshuo, Guangxi

The most attractive destination for backpackers in China. Located in Guangxi province of southwest China. Follow the trails introduced by this site, in the countryside not yet touched by hordes of tourists, you would easily enjoy a picturesque limestone landscape along Li river and Yulong river.  More

Hakka Tulou , Fujian

Virtually all the tulou’s in this region, with the exception of two that has been converted to museums, are “alive” i.e. still inhabited by residents. Most of the dwellers are older folks- the younger ones had mainly moved out to newer and modern brick buildings which are cleaner, more comfortable and hygienic. In fact there have been many cases of tulou’s crumbling due to age and neglect. What will happen to these tulou’s when the older folks passed away will be an unknown. The bigger and nicer ones will have a place in tourism while the faith of the others is question marks.  More

Wujiang Gorge, Chongqing

87% of Wu Jiang valley is surrounded by steep mountains that forms a large number of beautiful gorges. Some of the most picturesque landscapes, called Wu Jiang Gallery, are found between Yanhe in northwest Guizhou and Gongtan in southeast Chongqing.   More
