Getting there
|
|
|
| Zoige
in Chinese is pronounced 'Ruoergai'. If you go to Langmusi from
Songpan in Sichuan, you have to stay one night in Zoige in order
to catch the bus next morning for Langmusi. |
 |
At
an elevation of 3470 meters, surrounded by grasslands, Zoige
is a town of ugly concrete buildings. There were no newspaper
for sale in Zoige during our visit! Maybe local people either
didn't have time or interest to read newspaper. Vegetables,
transported from lower land, are very precious. Fortunately
there is a beautiful monastery at the east end of the town where
we spent most of our time. We were invited by nuns for Tibetan
tea. There was a power failure due to a storm one night. The
town fell into a pitch-dark. We were told that electricity failure
happened quite often in Zoige.
Around Zoige: The first bend of Yellow River at 65km west of
Zoige is worth a visit.
(see the map) The river coming from west turns to north
near Tangke, flowing through a wonderful landscape of wild flowers,
meadows. You can stay overnight at a fabulous Tibetan monastery.
Access: Take a Barkam bus from Zoige and get off at Dangke,
walk the rest 2km. |

Zoige
--> Barkam:
Y47, The road was still under construction
in Sept. 2001. The journey took almost 11 hours with a stop
in Hongyuan for lunch.
Hongyuan(red plain) got its name
as Red Army passed this place during the famous Long March,
a tough traverse of grassland where there was no nomads living
there at that time. Today, the grassland is covered with thousands
of cattle and sheep, it is hard to imagine the wild past.
On the grassland near Hongyuan, several white Chortens stand
in alignment, their white sacred shape contrasting beautifully
to the grassland and blue sky. In Hongyuan, apart from visiting
these Chortens, you can also rent a horse from Tibetan nomads
to ride on the vast grassland.
